# What Shopify's native bin location tracks

Shopify has a native Bin name field for inventory. You can assign one bin to a variant at each Shopify Location, edit it through an inventory CSV or the bulk editor, and print pick lists in bin-name order. If every variant has one permanent shelf, stop there. The native field does the job.

Things get awkward when the same SKU lives in two places inside one warehouse. Shopify still keeps the quantity at the Location level. It can say that the Amsterdam warehouse has 50 units and that the variant belongs in A-01. It cannot say that A-01 holds 8 while the other 42 are in overstock. # The pick face and overstock problem

A pick face is the easy-to-reach bin your team uses for daily orders. The rest of the stock can sit higher up, farther away, or on a pallet. That arrangement gives popular products the good shelf space without trying to cram a six-month supply beside the packing bench.

Say a variant has 50 units on hand. Eight fit in A-01 near packing and 42 sit in OVERSTOCK-03. Shopify should keep reporting 50 because all 50 are sellable. Your warehouse system has a different job: remember the split, send routine picks to A-01, and flag when that shelf needs a refill.

# Where the common workarounds fall apart

You can type A-01 / OVERSTOCK-03 into Shopify's Bin name field, but now you have two labels and no quantities. A picker still cannot tell which bin has enough stock. The pick list cannot choose one, and the replenishment problem remains invisible. A variant metafield runs into the same wall because it stores text rather than a count for each bin.

Using a separate Shopify Location for every aisle is worse. Locations are meant for warehouses, shops, and fulfillment services. They affect order routing, transfers, fulfillment, and the inventory customers can buy. Modeling shelves as Locations turns a rack move into a commerce change, which is a lot of machinery for shifting a box thirty feet.

Keep the bin out of the SKU and barcode too. A product's identity should not change because you moved it to another shelf. Renaming TEE-BLK-M to A01-TEE-BLK-M can upset reports, integrations, and purchasing records. # What a multi-bin ledger needs to remember

A multi-bin ledger connects a Shopify Location to its physical bins, then records the variants and quantities inside each one. A variant can appear in several bins. A bin can hold several variants. For each variant, the bin counts should add up to Shopify's on-hand total at that Location.

The arithmetic matters more than the labels. If Shopify says 50 and the bins add up to 47, three units have no recorded home. If Shopify says 47 and the bins add up to 50, the bin ledger has three units that customers can no longer buy. # A normal day with two bins

New stock usually lands in overstock first. When A-01 runs low, someone moves a case down from OVERSTOCK-03. The bin ledger subtracts from one and adds to the other, while Shopify stays at the same warehouse total. If a pick has already claimed the last unit in A-01, the next worker should not be sent there for it.

When an order arrives, BinTech builds a location-scoped pick list from the bins that can fill it. You can send the picker to the preferred shelf, avoid a second stop when one bin has enough, or clear the last few units from a small bin. Not every movement starts in the warehouse. A POS sale, return, damaged item, or manual Shopify adjustment changes the Location total without naming a bin. # When native Shopify is enough

A multi-bin layer earns its keep when a SKU has pick stock and backstock, spills into temporary overflow, or needs shelf-level counts.
